Emma for UN

E M M A   W A T S O N
UN WOMEN GOODWILL AMBASSADOR

#HeForShe

She has raised the bar yet again; a movement that needed to get a momentum, and now with the aid of this amazing young woman we see a whole another side to, and for, "feminism".
Yes, I am a feminist. I have been ever since I understood the word and what it meant, maybe more importantly to me in my own perspective. And no one quite adorned the words in a way where I could go, 'There, that's it!'. Till now..

Anyone that has known me for about a week or longer, will know that I have followed Emma Watson in all her words, fashion and viewpoints ever since I was 12 and began my lifelong love of reading books with Harry Potter. It is not simply blind faith, it is something I have very consciously done, having such a role model to look up to in more ways than one. And she's yet to say and act in a way where I am disappointed as a fan, as an admirer and as a female.

The way she carries herself is something I very much choose to replicate in my life as well, with respect and dignity and just being yourself and being alright in your skin. Especially these days I think we as an American society are so unphased upon hearing a child celebrity going downhill in their personal life and in public. Which is why this amazing woman is so crucial, to change the way we look at them, that they're just as human, and that not all are the same.

She's done work in the Harry Potter movies, outside that she's even done other small and big projects professionally. She attended Brown University and graduated this year, and now she is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. You just want to applaud for her, for using her credibility, status, and celebritydom to emphasize and speak on such an important issue.

"UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson, delivers her moving remarks during the HeForShe Special Event at United Nations Headquarters in New York on September 20, 2014. Take action, visit: HeForShe.org This impassioned speech kicked-off the HeForShe Solidarity Movement for Gender Equality. HeForShe brings together one half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity for the benefit of all."

The most important thing out of this, was what she mentioned in her speech. That this is an invitation to men to be part of the solution, since they are part of the problem. And to raise their voice and raise awareness for it. There are many many feminist men to look upto at this point for this given situation, such as here you have Douglas Booth, Logan Lerman, Chris Colfer and Simon Pegg who tweeted this picture for Emma and her speech. And even others who have just been personally vocal about the general topic of feminism.

Joseph Gordon Levitt

I read that you consider yourself a “male feminist,” and you credit your parents who are educators and really taught you about the history of feminism. But nowadays, you have a lot of young stars coming out against being labeled a feminist.

"Coming out against the label? Wow. I guess I’m not aware of that. What that means to me is that you don’t let your gender define who you are—you can be who you want to be, whether you’re a man, a woman, a boy, a girl, whatever. However you want to define yourself, you can do that and should be able to do that, and no category ever really describes a person because every person is unique. That, to me, is what “feminism” means. So yes, I’d absolutely call myself a feminist. And if you look at history, women are an oppressed category of people. There’s a long, long history of women suffering abuse, injustice, and not having the same opportunities as men, and I think that’s been very detrimental to the human race as a whole. I’m a believer that if everyone has a fair chance to be what they want to be and do what they want to do, it’s better for everyone. It benefits society as a whole."

Farhan Akhtar - Actor/ Director

Patrick Stewart

Having witnessed his father physically abuse his mother as a child, Stewart gave a riveting speech for Amnesty International UK in October 2009. Remembering the impact the abuse had on him as a boy, he spoke to the responsibility men have to end this violence:

“Even if she had [done something to provoke my father to hit her], violence is a choice. And it’s a choice that a man makes. We can choose to stop it.”

Mark Ruffalo

The 46-year-old actor penned a letter in August 2013 in support of reproductive rights. Ruffalo opened up about his own mother's experience of having an illegal abortion and used the letter to rally supporters:

"I invite you to find your voice and let it be known that you stand for abortion rights and the dignity of a woman to be the master of her own life and body. I invite you to search your soul and ask yourself if you actually stand for what you say you stand for. Thank you for being here today and thank you for standing up for the women in my life."

Prince Harry

In a June 2013 speech for the CHIME For Change concert the second royal son said,

"When women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them -- their families, their communities, and their countries. This is not just about women, we men need to recognize the part we play too. Real men treat women with dignity and give them the respect they deserve."
And even outside people that are famous for acting or something, there are many role models, if you remember Malala and her incredible fight for education in her country. She was and still is someone that just inspires power amongst women and makes you realize what form of oppression is taking place in other parts of the world, that we also need to focus on.

It's time to stop being positively primeval… don't you think? Women deserve equal education, pay, dignity, respect, space, appreciation, rights to their own body, rights to make their own decisions.

I hope you guys liked this post and the topic of discussion. I think with our everyday lives we should be aware of what is really going on around us, and that's why I personally wanted to put light on it. It matters to me, and it should matter equally to all of us.
